CAUSES & TREATMENT
Issues with the bladder i.e.: frequency, urgency and urinary incontinence, call for evaluation as there are a number of possible causes.
The most common cause of urinary incontinence, is infection of the bladder (urinary tract infection – UTI). Its hallmark is burning pain while urinating. The second most common causes of urinary incontinence are a weakness of the pelvic floor in women and benign prostate hypertrophy in men.
But besides the above mentioned causes, severe stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal) may cause urinary incontinence in seniors.
Finally, another less common but serious cause for urinary incontinence is Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus. It presents with urinary incontinence, a gait disturbance and in an advanced stage with dementia.
